Jan Gavin, Driving Instructor

Jan Gavin visited JET South Liverpool in June 2004 to find out if there was any help available that might help her become a Driving Instructor. Jan had first tried to train to become a driving instructor in 1999, but at the time driving courses were ineligible for support through a Career Development Loan so she decided to take a job elsewhere and save the money herself. By 2004 Jan felt she might never achieve her ambition.

As a lone parent from Garston, Jan had already managed to fund the first two stages of the Driving Instructor course herself but could not afford the final £800 to complete her training.

Following a meeting with Jan, JET Guidance Officer, Shelaine Craig, contacted the Lone Parent Advisor at Jobcentre Plus in Garston and the South Liverpool Action Team for Jobs to find out if any support would be available.

Jobcentre Plus agreed to contribute towards Jan's childcare costs and the cost of the books she needed for her driving tuition and the Action Team for Jobs said that would she would be eligible for support from their special grants programme to fund part of the course costs.
